JOKER Sequel Officially in The Works and Director Todd Phillips Will Develop One More DC Origin Movie

As we expected, Warner Bros. and director Todd Phillips are officially going to work on developing a sequel to the mega-hit R-rated Joker film. On top of that, Phillips will also develop an origin film for at least one other DC character.

According to THR, Phillips had a meeting with Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich and pitched him an idea to develop “a portfolio of DC characters' origin stories.” Emmerich ended up walking out of that meeting with the rights to at least one other character, but we don’t know who that character is.

Phillips is now working out a deal to direct the Joker sequel and he will write the script with Scott Silver, who also worked with him on the first movie, which has grossed more than a billion dollars.

As for Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, the studio has sequel options in place for him. So, he will return to the role, which is something that he has made clear he wants to do. Phoenix was so freakin’ good in the first movie that he’s definitely going to land some big award nominations.

It’ll be interesting to see what Phillips is planning for the Joker sequel and who this other DC character is that he’ll be making a movie about. When previously talking about how he would handle a sequel to Joker, Phillips said:

“It couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime’. It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does. Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

What are you hoping to see for the Joker sequel? Who do you think the DC character is that Phillips will give us an origin story for? What character would you like it to be?
