Jon Bernthal Co-Writing Marvel’s PUNISHER Special Presentation with Director Reinaldo Marcus Green
Following Frank Castle’s return in Daredevil: Born Again, Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher is set to take center stage in his own Special Presentation on Disney+. But this time, Bernthal isn’t just starring, he’s co-writing the script alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green (We Own This City).
Marvel Studios' Brad Winderbaum confirmed the news, revealing that the idea for a standalone Punisher story took shape during the production of Born Again.
In the series, Matt Murdock seeks out Castle for a mission he himself is “unwilling to do.” Whatever that entails, it clearly sets the stage for Castle to reclaim the spotlight in a brutal and emotionally charged story.
Winderbaum told Entertainment Weekly: "It's like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It's so exciting."
Bernthal’s take on the Punisher remains one of the most acclaimed portrayals in Marvel’s live-action run. His return to the role, now within the MCU, presents a great opportunity to explore the fascinating character even more.
"Bernthal is a generational actor," Winderbaum continued. "He's incredible—what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he's a great writer. He knows the character inside and out....
“Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon's Punisher in particular. The idea that he's in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever."
Details on the plot are still under wraps, but fans might get a better sense of what’s coming once Daredevil: Born Again debuts.
Marvel’s Punisher Special Presentation is slated to premiere in 2026, alongside the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. With Bernthal co-writing and Green directing, this is sure to be raw and intense story.
