Jon Favreau Reveals Another Classic Droid Will Appear in THE MANDALORIAN
Writer and director Jon Favreau has shared a new image from the set of The Mandalorian and as you can see, it features a classic droid from the first Star Wars film, A New Hope.
This looks like R5-D4, a.k.a. Red, the droid that Uncle Owen Lars picked out a droid lineup to help on his moisture farm. The R5-D4 ended up malfunctioning due to a bad motivator. This led to Owen purchasing R2-D2 instead.
It was revealed in the Star Wars anthology book From a Certain Point of View in the the story "The Red One" that R2-D2 convinced the droid to malfunction in hopes of saving the galaxy.
I doubt this droid will have a big role. I imagine it will just be in the background for the fans to look for. The years have not been kind to the droid. It has gone through a lot of wear and tear.
The cast for the series includes Pedro Pascal (Narcos) as “a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy.” He will be joined by Gina Carano (Deadpool), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Carl Weathers (Predator), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
The Mandalorian is written and executive produced by Favreau, with Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) directing the first episode and serving as executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Additional directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).
The show is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order and follows “a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”
It was also previously revealed the story will follow a bounty hunter who is protecting a baby that he was initially sent to kill. You can read some more details regarding that here.
