Jon Favreau Says the Smartest Marvel Move He Ever Made Was Casting Himself in IRON MAN

When Jon Favreau signed on to direct Iron Man, there was no way of knowing he was helping kick off a cinematic universe that would dominate pop culture for the next two decades.

The filmmaker made plenty of important decisions while bringing Tony Stark's story to the screen, but according to Favreau, the smartest move he made wasn't casting Robert Downey Jr. or helping shape Marvel's future.

It was giving himself a small role in the movie that turned into one of the best career investments he could have made.

While making an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote The Mandalorian and Grogu, Favreau reflected on one particular choice that ended up paying off in a major way over the years. Speaking about casting himself as Tony Stark's loyal bodyguard, chauffeur, and friend Happy Hogan, he joked:

"The smartest thing I ever did was give myself a cameo in that first one in the Iron Man because that thing put my kids through school.”

Back when Iron Man was released, nobody knew the MCU would grow into the entertainment giant it is today. The film was a gamble for Marvel, and even the casting of Downey as Tony Stark was considered a huge risk at the time.

Favreau certainly couldn't have predicted that a relatively small supporting role would keep bringing him back to the franchise for nearly two decades.

Because Happy Hogan debuted in the very first MCU movie, the character became a recurring fixture throughout the saga. Favreau reprised the role in all three Iron Man films, appeared in Marvel's Spider-Man trilogy, showed up in Avengers: Endgame, and most recently popped up in Deadpool & Wolverine.

That's an impressive run for a character who originally seemed destined to be little more than a supporting player.

Looking back, it's easy to see why Favreau considers it such a smart move. While he has remained busy as a director, producer, writer, and actor across numerous projects, Happy Hogan provided a steady connection to Marvel and, as he humorously pointed out, a very practical benefit for his family as well.

At the moment, Happy isn't expected to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Still, Marvel has a habit of bringing familiar faces back when fans least expect it.

With massive crossover projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, it wouldn't be surprising to see Happy Hogan return somewhere down the line.

For now, fans can look back and appreciate that one seemingly minor casting decision ended up becoming one of the longest-running roles in the MCU. Not bad for what started as a small cameo in a movie that changed Hollywood forever.
