Jon Favreau Wants THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU To Feel Like Your First Time Watching STAR WARS
When Star Wars made the jump to Disney+, The Mandalorian carved out its own identity on the small screen. Now, with The Mandalorian and Grogu heading to theaters, there’s been a big question hanging over the project… how do you take something fans associate with episodic storytelling and turn it into a full-on cinematic event?
It turns out Jon Favreau has been thinking about that from the start, and his approach is exactly what you’d hope for if you grew up loving Star Wars.
The filmmaker recently sat down with cast members including Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and even Grogu himself for a roundtable shared by Star Wars.
During the conversation, Favreau said that this isn’t just a longer episode blown up for theaters. He’s going all in on crafting something that feels massive, immersive, and worthy of the big screen.
“Because it’s IMAX, because it’s a movie, I wanted to recapture the feeling of when I first saw Star Wars. So, when we’re making this, we were using all the technology that’s available. And then, of course, we have a lot of classic stuff.”
He isn’t just chasing scale, he’s chasing emotion. That original sense of wonder people felt back in 1977 watching Star Wars for the first time is something filmmakers have been trying to bottle ever since.
It’s not easy, and honestly, it probably can’t be fully recreated. But aiming for even a fraction of that magic is a great thing and his intentions are in the right place.
What’s interesting is how he’s blending modern filmmaking tools with practical, old-school techniques. That balance has been a huge part of what made The Mandalorian series stand out in the first place, and it sounds like Favreau is doubling down on that philosophy for the film.
He also says this isn’t just about longtime fans reliving nostalgia. There’s a new generation stepping into this galaxy, and he wants them to feel that same spark.
“All of that is to give a whole new audience that same feeling of excitement I had the first time.”
That’s a big swing, but it’s the kind of mindset you want behind a project like this. Star Wars has always been about discovery, and if this movie can tap into that even a little, it could end up being something special.
This is all great, but I just wish the marketing for the film actually reflected what Favreau is saying here, because the marketing team is really dropping the ball on this movie.
The film brings together a solid cast, with Pascal returning as Din Djarin, Weaver joining the universe, and Jeremy Allen White stepping in as Rotta the Hutt.
We won’t have to wait long to see how it all comes together as The Mandalorian And Grogu hits theaters on May 22, and if Favreau pulls this off, it’s going to be an awesome experience for fans!
