Karl Urban Says He'd Love To Make a DREDD Sequel But Doesn't Think It's Gonna Happen

I still remember the first time that I saw Dredd. It was an early screening that was shown during San Diego Comic-Con. I loved that movie and like all of the other fans who watched and enjoyed it, I couldn’t wait to see a sequel!

Well, as you know the years passed by and as they passed a sequel to the film became less likely to happen. The is a series that has been in development for awhile titled Mega-City One that Urban was in talks to be a part of, but even that production has seemed to slow down.

During a recent appearance at C2E2, Urban was asked about a possible sequel by a fan, and he would love to make a sequel, but as a fan, he explains that he would just like to see more Dredd:

"Listen, I would love to make it, I'm on the record saying that a bunch of times. I don't know if that's gonna happen. I think that the guys that own the rights to Dredd, Rebellion, I think they're developing something called 'Mega-City One' and it would just be great to see more Dredd, whether it's with me or not, it doesn't matter. I'm a fan of Dredd and there's so many great stories there. I'd love to see them. And I have no doubt that, someday, someone will make it. It's just a matter of time."

If Dredd ever does come back, it would be fantastic to see Urban back in the role. The franchise wouldn’t be the same without him. As for the possibility of Alex Garland returning to make it, he’s not in any rush. When previously asked if he would ever return to the franchise, the filmmaker said:

"No. It was a pretty crude experience, for a bunch of reasons. At the end of it, I didn’t want to go back. I love Dredd, by which I mean I love the character, but I’m not in any hurry to do that again."

So why was his experience on the film so bad? Well, Garland was credited as the writer of the movie and while Pete Travis was credited as the director, Garland was the real director of the film. Urban previously said:

“A huge part of the success of Dredd is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don’t realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie. I just hope when people think of Alex Garland’s filmography that Dredd is the first film that he made before Ex Machina. You think about it in those terms; it goes Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation.”

It’s understandable why Garland wouldn’t be interested in returning to make another Dredd film, but I still want to see Urban back in the role at some point!
