Keanu Reeves is Teaming Up With TRANSFORMERS ONE Director Josh Cooley For New LEGO Movie
Keanu Reeves is already spending time in the toy world thanks to his return as Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5, but it looks like he’s about to jump into another toy box. This time, it involves LEGO bricks, a major Hollywood studio, and one of animation’s most exciting filmmakers.
According to Deadline, Reeves is in negotiations to star in a new hybrid live-action and animated LEGO movie that’s currently in development at Universal.
The project will be directed by Josh Cooley, whose career path has been impressive to watch. After years working his way up through Pixar, Cooley made his directorial debut with Toy Story 4 in 2019.
That film introduced audiences to Reeves’ over-the-top stunt toy Duke Caboom and kicked off a creative connection between the actor and filmmaker. Cooley later directed the fantastic and criminally underappreciated Transformers One, proving he has a knack for bringing animated worlds to life in exciting ways.
Details on the new LEGO movie are being kept tightly under wraps. There’s currently no information regarding the story, the characters, or exactly how the live-action and animation elements will be combined. It’s also unclear whether Reeves will physically appear in the movie or if he’ll only lend his voice to an animated character.
Still, the circumstances surrounding the project suggest Reeves may have a larger role than simply stepping into a recording booth.
According to the report, Universal has been developing multiple LEGO-related concepts and speaking with a variety of actors. Reeves apparently wasn’t an easy get, but once he showed interest, the studio brought Cooley aboard, which ultimately helped secure the actor’s involvement.
The movie is also significant for LEGO’s future on the big screen. Universal acquired the film rights to the LEGO brand through a five-year deal nearly five years ago.
As that agreement approached its expiration window, there was some uncertainty about what would happen next. With a major project now gaining momentum, it seems increasingly likely those rights will remain active and continue generating new LEGO adventures.
Of course, the lack of story details leaves plenty of room for speculation, and that’s where things get really fun. If you ask me, a meta adventure starring Reeves as himself would be an absolute blast.
Imagine him getting pulled into a LEGO universe populated by brick-built versions of characters and worlds inspired by John Wick, The Matrix, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Speed, Point Break, and Constantine. That seems like it would make for a hell of a fun movie!
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Universal and Cooley have in store. Until we learn more, it’s fun to imagine what kind of LEGO-shaped chaos Reeves might be stepping into next.
