Kevin Costner Offers a Promising Update on the Sequels to HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA Films
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was released in theaters early this summer, and it didn’t do very well at the box office. It was a great Western that set up a big story as it was the first of four parts.
Due to the film's underperformance Warner Bros. pulled Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 from its theatrical release date. But all of these things aren’t stopping Kevin Costner from finishing his passion project. He is determined to finish them.
During an interview with Today, Costner offered a promising update, saying: "I love the journey of this thing. It's been the hardest thing I've ever done, but I love this movie.
“I love the second one – and the third one's even harder than the first two, and the fourth one completes the story. I made a promise to myself, I'm trying desperately to keep it, and to bring it to people, these kind of giant stories, and I hope that people fall in love with these characters."
He added: "A lot of times, the things that you want to make don't immediately resonate with anyone else. It's only after you're done that people begin to understand what it was, and almost, they take ownership themselves, of 'I love this movie.
“I love these characters. I didn't know where this story was going. It's nice in life to be surprised. The plan is, I've already shot a little bit of the third. And to perhaps shoot them back to back next spring."
So, regardless of the first film’s box office disappointment and the uncertainty of the release of Chapter 2, it seems like Costner has plans to finish the next two films no matter what.
Horizon: An American Saga chronicles “a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Experienced through the eyes of many, the epic journey is fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements to the interactions with the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.”
Costner previously talked about the story, saying: “It’s a really beautiful story; it’s a hard story. It really involves a lot of women, to be honest. There are a lot of men in it, too, but the women are really strong in Horizon. It’s just them trying to get by every day in a world that was impossibly tough.
“They were often [dragged] out to these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women were following their men. They didn’t ask to be in these territories that were unsettled and dangerous, and life wasn’t easy. I’ve chosen to make sure that was really obvious, that that wasn’t easy, and how vulnerable people were.”
The movie also has a great cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Alejandro Edda, Will Patton, and Tatanka Means.
