Kevin Feige Discusses THE ETERNALS Saying It's a Big, Expensive, and Necessary Risk for Marvel
It’s been interesting to see the fans’ reactions regarding Marvel Studios’ next big cosmic adventure film, The Eternals. While some are excited, it seems like there are a good amount that don’t really care about it.
Personally, I’m stoked! I love the lore of The Eternals and The Celestials! Jack Kirby did some incredibly radical stuff with these characters and the story and I’m super pumped to see how Marvel and director Chloe Zhao bring his vision to life.
During a recent interview with THR, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked about the film and explained that it’s a big, expensive, and necessary risk for them:
"It is a very big movie. It is a very expensive movie. And we are making it because we believe in [director Chloe Zhao's] vision and we believe in what those characters can do and we believe we need to continue to grow and evolve and change and push our genre forward. That's a risk if I've ever heard one."
I’m happy to see that as Marvel continues their cinematic journey they are still taking big risks to try new things as they introduce audiences to new characters. When previously talking about the film, Feige said:
“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
He also teased The Eternals connections to other MCU films like Guardians of the Galaxy, and said we’ll learn more about the agenda of the Celestials:
"It will be a story that will introduce you to this incredibly eclectic group of immortals, they're the focus of the story. It takes place in our universe — it takes place in the MCU, so you'll hear mentions and stuff about it but yes, the Celestials go back a long way. We know a little bit about them. The Collector told us about Celestials, Knowhere is the severed head of a Celestial. Ego was involved with them, but we learn much more about their agenda and what they've been up to."
The main characters in the film will be played by Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Icarus), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), and Don Lee (Gilgamesh).
Eternals is already shooting and the film is set to hit theaters on November 6th, 2020. You can check out some previously released set photos here. What are you most excited about in regards to The Eternals movie?
