Kevin Feige Talks About Marvel's Approach to Developing CAPTAIN MARVEL

Even though we've got a long way to go before we see Captain Marvel hit the big screen, a lot of fans seem to be excited to see how exactly Marvel will handle the character. They recently announced that the movie would be directed by indie filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. While talking about the directors and why Marvel hired them, Kevin Feige told Vulture:

“For us, what Anna and Ryan have done so spectacularly well in all of their movies, albeit on a much smaller scale than they’re about to do, is create a singular character journey. The stories they’ve told have been so diverse, but regardless of the subject matter, they can dive into it and hone in on that character’s journey.”

He goes on to talk about the story they are setting out to tell and their approach to the character. He's already called Captain Marvel the most power being in the universe, who can fly, shoot energy bursts, and take out Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk easily if she wanted to. When asked how they find the right stakes to make her journey a compelling one, Feige said:

"That’s a big part of the story line we’re putting together, and it’s certainly been a big part of the development conversation."

According to Feige, this is where Boden and Fleck can "really make their mark." he goes on to say:

"Particularly for Captain Marvel, which is going to have a lot of spectacle, it ultimately needs to be about the three-dimensional, multilayered Carol Danvers character. You have to be able to track her and follow her and relate to her at all points of the movie, regardless of how many visual effects and spaceships and bad guys are filling the frame. That’s what’s important."

What I love about Marvel is that they have an understanding that the story comes first. All the big, awesome visuals and special effects are just part of the tool in telling a great story. 

The movie is being written by Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman. All we know about the film at this point in that it will follow Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), "an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight."
