Kevin Feige Teases Kingpin Could Finally Appear in a Spider-Man Movie
Marvel fans have been wanting to see Spider-Man square off against Wilson Fisk on the big screen. It's one of the most iconic rivalries from the comics, but thanks to complicated character rights, it always seemed like a matchup that would stay on the wishlist.
Now, though, Kevin Feige has offered a surprisingly encouraging update that suggests the door might finally be opening for Vincent D’Onofrio's Kingpin to cross paths with Tom Holland's Spider-Man.
It's wild to think back to a time when the Marvel Netflix universe felt completely separate from the rest of the MCU. Fast forward to today, and that wall has practically disappeared.
Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock has become a familiar face in Marvel Studios projects, and Jon Bernthal's Punisher is making the leap as well. Kingpin, however, has remained the big question mark.
D’Onofrio has previously explained that Wilson Fisk's situation has been more complicated because of the character's rights, making a Spider-Man appearance much harder to pull off. But Feige sounds far more optimistic these days.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Feige acknowledged there are still hurdles, but they don't seem impossible to overcome.
"I mean, there are things to navigate like everything else," he observed. "But we talked about all those things."
That simple statement is enough to get fans talking because it suggests Marvel Studios and Sony are at least having the conversations necessary to make Kingpin's long-awaited Spider-Man debut happen.
D’Onofrio's version of Fisk has become one of the MCU's strongest recurring villains. After stealing scenes throughout the original Marvel Netflix Daredevil series, the character made his official MCU return in Hawkeye before becoming a major force in Echo.
His rise continued in Daredevil: Born Again, where Fisk was elected mayor of New York and used his power to wage war against vigilantes.
By the end of Born Again Season 2, however, that chapter appeared to close. Matt Murdock publicly exposed Fisk while revealing himself as Daredevil, creating a mutually assured destruction scenario that left neither man untouched.
Kingpin ultimately accepted a plea deal that sent him away from New York, although he's already confirmed to return in Born Again Season 3.
As incredible as D’Onofrio continues to be in the role, there's also a growing feeling that Fisk's ongoing conflict with Daredevil has reached a natural stopping point.
Bringing him into Spider-Man's world could give the character an entirely new direction while finally delivering a rivalry comic readers have enjoyed for decades.
Kingpin has always been much more than a Daredevil villain. He's one of Spider-Man's most dangerous enemies as well, making the possibility of seeing him challenge Holland's Peter Parker incredibly appealing.
The biggest obstacle has always been the complicated ownership history surrounding the character. Years ago, Kingpin's film rights were shared between Sony, Fox, and Marvel because Fox controlled the Daredevil franchise.
Documents from the old 2014 agreement reportedly confirmed that Sony could use Kingpin in Spider-Man films while Marvel retained the ability to use him in Daredevil projects.
Those agreements have changed several times since Marvel Studios and Sony began collaborating on Spider-Man, but Kingpin has remained one of the trickier characters to untangle. Based on Feige's comments, though, it sounds like there's finally a workable path that could allow D’Onofrio's Fisk to step into a Spider-Man movie.
If that happens, it would be a dream matchup for Marvel fans. Seeing Holland's Spider-Man battle D’Onofrio's calculating crime boss has always felt like something the MCU was building toward.
At the same time, there's an interesting wrinkle to all of this. During Kingpin's reign as mayor in Born Again, Spider-Man was nowhere to be found. His absence made sense from a real-world rights perspective, but within the MCU it raises a few questions.
It's strange to imagine New York's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man sitting out Fisk's Anti-Vigilante Task Force, the sweeping arrests, and everything else that unfolded during his time in office.
Because of that, it's fair to wonder if the perfect opportunity for this crossover has already slipped by. Even with Fisk returning in Born Again Season 3, some fans feel his story has already reached a satisfying conclusion.
Still, if Marvel Studios and Sony can finally untangle the remaining rights issues, it may not matter. A Spider-Man versus Kingpin movie has been high on fans' wish lists for years, and Feige's latest comments suggest it might finally move from wishful thinking to reality.
If Marvel can pull it off, this is one comic book showdown that deserves its moment on the big screen.
