Kevin Smith Wants Austin Butler to Play the Devil in DOGMA 2
Kevin Smith’s wild theological comedy Dogma turned twenty-five last year, yet its anniversary celebration happened fashionably late. The filmmaker hit the road in 2025 because he finally pulled off something fans had been waiting on for decades.
He secured the rights to the movie after Harvey Weinstein kept it locked away for years. With the hostage situation over, Smith wasted no time. The film is now available in a proper 4K release on Ultra HD and digital, and the director is deep into writing Dogma 2 with one hell of a casting idea.
If you remember the original movie, God was played by Alanis Morissette in one of Smith’s most irreverent choices. The Devil never showed up, though that changes in the sequel. Satan steps into the spotlight this time and Smith already has a dream pick for Lucifer. He wants to cast Austin Butler.
Before Butler exploded with an Oscar nominated performance in Elvis and showcased a savage presence in Dune: Part Two, he popped up in Smith’s horror comedy Yoga Hosers.
That movie starred Harley Quinn Smith and Lily Rose Depp as convenience store clerks battling Satanists, with Butler playing one of them while Kevin Smith himself portrayed an army of tiny Nazi bratwursts. It was a strange little adventure, but clearly Butler made an impression.
Speaking with /Film about the new Dogma release, Smith revealed the actor who keeps coming to mind as he writes the Devil. Smith said:
"I worked with a kid years and years ago, and he was so sweet nice boy, very talented and then he went and became super famous. Whenever I write the Devil, I think of Austin Butler."
Smith added more about what kind of Lucifer he is building for the story.
"Especially after 'Dune,' man. His Feyd was pretty badass. But our Devil is ... he's not like arched eyebrow insidious. He's sexier than that. He's like a grunge rocker. And I think Austin could pull that off pretty well."
A grunge rock Lucifer played by Butler sounds like the kind of punchy chaotic energy that Smith could have fun with in a Dogma sequel.
Smith is still shaping the script for Dogma 2, so it may be a while before we see whether Butler steps into the inferno. What do you think about Butler taking on the role of the Devil?
