KINGDOM HEARTS 4 Trailer Confirms Late 2027 Release and Reveals COCO World
Seven years after Sora last headlined a new numbered adventure, Kingdom Hearts fans finally have something to get stoked about. Kingdom Hearts 4 now has an official release window, and Square Enix also revealed the first new Disney world joining Sora's next reality-hopping adventure.
During Disney's big Entertainment showcase, Square Enix debuted a new trailer confirming that Kingdom Hearts 4 will arrive in late 2027. It's still a long way off, and we don't have an exact date, but after years of scattered updates and long stretches of silence, having an actual target feels pretty damn good.
The trailer also revealed that Coco will be part of the game, giving us our first confirmed new world for Kingdom Hearts 4.
The reveal is handled in a pretty cool way. The footage initially plays like a return to Pixar's colorful Land of the Dead before Sora enters the picture. From there, the trailer offers a substantial look at the Coco-inspired world while dropping additional clues about where Sora's story is headed.
Coco is also a fascinating choice considering the themes Square Enix appears to be exploring this time around. Memory, forgetting, death, family, and the connections people leave behind are central to the Pixar film, and forgetting looks like it will play an important role in Sora's journey throughout Kingdom Hearts 4.
I love how this franchise likes to weave Disney stories into its wonderfully complicated mythology. Sora also gets another world-specific outfit for his trip into the world of Coco.
There's also more happening with the franchise beyond the next game. A Kingdom Hearts anime TV series is now in development, opening the door for a whole new audience to discover Sora's story.
There will be even more news coming from the D23 Kingdom Hearts panel on August 15th at 7:30 PM ET.
Seven years after Kingdom Hearts 3 arrived, we finally know roughly when Sora's next major adventure will begin.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is scheduled to launch in late 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
