KNIVES OUT Director Rian Johnson Says He Has Seriously Considered a MUPPET Murder Mystery Crossover
Rian Johnson is at the height of his career at this point, having just released his second film in the Knives Out murder mystery movie franchise. We know more films are coming, per Johnson’s deal with Netflix, though beyond the recently released second film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, we don’t know what the next film(s) will look like.
Johnson recently chatted with Netflix’s Tudum, and offered one surprising idea he has been seriously considering- a Knives Out/Muppet crossover movie:
"It’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant, and I ended up really giving [it] some serious thought. As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously."
I honestly think this sounds amazing. Muppets are known for their smart humor, and a Knives Out-style whodunnit would be a no-brainer for this star-studded cast the films are known for. But unfortunately, it sounds like Johnson has rolled the idea around, and it not moving forward with it. He continued:
"I think those two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they’ll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it’ll feel like a Muppet movie. I wouldn’t want to compromise either of them. And I feel like in order to make it well and make it work, you’d have to make a choice and compromise one or the other. If I ever make a Muppet movie, I just want to make a great Muppet movie."
I’d love to see this happen, but with Johnson looking to develop Knives Out 3 as well as a Star Wars Trilogy, it looks like his slate is full for the foreseeable future.
What do you think? Would you like to see a Muppets Knives Out?
