KPOP DEMON HUNTERS 2 Is Officially Happening, but Fans Will Be Waiting Until 2029

The K-Pop demon-slaying action is coming back. Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have officially confirmed that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in the works, but fans will have to wait a while to see it. The sequel is currently aiming for a 2029 release.

Bloomberg reported that both studios finalized a deal to bring the sequel to life. Animated films, especially ones packed with great animation and as much wild and fun energy as KPop Demon Hunters, take time to make. After how huge the first movie became, the creative team wants to ensure the follow-up meets expectations.

When KPop Demon Hunters premiered in June, it turned into a global hit almost overnight. The movie shot to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 chart and held its spot for weeks, eventually becoming the platform’s most-watched original film ever.

Its soundtrack also caught fire, with several songs topping radio charts and streaming playlists. Soon, fans were demanding a sequel, and talks of building an entire franchise began.

Still, putting the sequel together wasn’t simple. Sony Pictures Animation produced the film, but Netflix handled its distribution, which made the rights situation complicated.

Things became even more pressing when the film unexpectedly climbed to #1 at the U.S. box office weeks after its debut. Suddenly, the demand for more KPop Demon Hunters skyrocketed.

Co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans knew they couldn’t rush it. They wanted to make sure that the next story was worth telling.

“There’s definitely more we can do with these characters in this world,” Appelhans said a few weeks back. “And whatever it will be,” Kang added, “it will be a story that deserves to be a sequel, and it will be something that we want to see.”

The wait will be long, but it sounds like the creative team is committed to making it worth it. The 2029 release window is an estimate, and it could shift depending on how production moves along.

For now, fans can rest easy knowing that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is officially on the way, and the world of K-pop-fueled demon battles isn’t finished yet.
