KPOP DEMON HUNTERS 2 Producer Shares the Character Relationships She Wants to Explore in the Sequel

Fans are still riding high off the success of KPop Demon Hunters, and while a sequel might be a long way off, that isn’t stopping the creative team from thinking ahead.

One of the film’s producers has opened up about what she’d love to dig into next, and it sounds like there’s a lot more emotional and character-driven storytelling waiting to happen in KPop Demon Hunters 2.

In a recent interview with The Direct, Michelle Wong, producer at Sony Animation, shared which characters she believes deserve more time in the spotlight if the sequel gets the green light, and her picks make a lot of sense.

“For me, I'd like to explore Mira and Zoey's background and where they come from. Or even Derpy. More about Derpy and Sussie's relationship.”

The first KPop Demon Hunters gave us a strong taste of HUNTR/X’s present-day chaos as they balanced sold-out concerts with slaying demons and keeping the Honmoon sealed.

We got a glimpse into lead singer Rumi’s past, but Mira and Zoey mostly stayed rooted in the now. If these girls have been fighting supernatural threats for years, there’s clearly history there. Old battles. Old scars. Maybe even secrets we haven’t seen yet.

And then there’s Derpy.

The demonic cat started out as Rumi’s companion, but it didn’t take long for fans to latch onto the mischievous creature. More screen time for Derpy feels like a no-brainer. Exploring that dynamic with Sussie could add some unexpected emotional depth or chaotic fun to the sequel. Probably both.

KPop Demon Hunters follows HUNTR/X, a K-pop girl group who just happen to moonlight as demon slayers. When a rival boy band called The Saja Boys enters the picture and turns out to be demon hunters in disguise, the stakes skyrocket. Add in a forbidden relationship and a handful of dark secrets, and suddenly the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

The movie dominated. As 2025 rolled on, KPop Demon Hunters became the most-watched Netflix film of all time. It also earned serious awards recognition, landing nominations at the 2026 Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”

With that kind of success, a sequel feels inevitable. The only catch is timing. Early reports suggested a 2029 release window for KPop Demon Hunters 2, and more recent updates hint it could slip even further. So we might be waiting a while.

Still, if the next chapter dives deeper into Mira and Zoey’s origins, unpacks more of the team’s shared history, and gives Derpy the spotlight he clearly deserves, it could be worth the wait.

Until then, we’ll just keep replaying “Golden” and hoping HUNTR/X makes their comeback sooner rather than later.
