KRAVEN THE HUNTER Director Thinks He Crafted a "Good Damn Story" and Explains How
I’ve gotta say, I’m really not that excited about Sony Pictures’ upcoming Marvel movie Kraven The Hunter. Sure, it’s an R-rated film that will be filled with blood and violence, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a good story.
Fans have been burned by Sony too many times to think they will actually deliver a truly great Marvel movie, but director J.C. Chandor thinks that he’s made a solid film that tell a “good damn story.”
During a recent interview with CB, he talked about how he went about pulling that off, and reveals that he took more of a grounded approach to a comic book cinematic world that emphasizes quality storytelling instead of universe building.
He explained: “I don’t want to give away too many plot points, but the way that our film is structured, the rest of those worlds don’t really matter.
“If I told this version of this story really freaking well and aimed for quality of storytelling and then with Aaron [Taylor-Johnson] and our action team and the things we’ve come up with, I think people are going to be really excited about that… But my goal was to kind of isolate our movie, protect it and just tell, you know, a good damn story.”
Chandlor went on to say: “It’s a very grounded story… my favorite storylines in the Spider-Man world are street-level stories.
“There are obviously some storylines that ended up in outer space and everything else, but ours does not. It’s very much based here, here in our world.
Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Kraven.
In Kraven the Hunter, Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff is on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world. Taylor-Johnson called the project “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world. We know he is a fierce hunter, a highly trained killer.” He excitedly proclaimed, “F**k yeah, it will be rated R!”
The script for the film was written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man), and it also stars Ariana DeBose as Calypso, Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff, Fred Hechinger as Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as an unknown villain, Levi Miller, and Catch-22 star Christopher Abbott as the main villain, The Foreigner.
