LANTERNS Finale Promo Teases Sinestro, the Power of Fear, and Hal Jordan’s Return
The first promo for the season finale of Lanterns is here, and things are getting seriously interesting. Sinestro is talking about the power of fear, Hal Jordan’s fate may not be as permanent as it appeared, and John Stewart looks ready to finally become the Green Lantern he was meant to be.
HBO and DC Studios have released the teaser ahead of next Sunday’s finale, and Sinestro becomes one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle. He tells John that “fear can be the most powerful force in the universe,” which certainly sounds like the series could be planting the seeds for the Sinestro Corps.
Of course, Sinestro has another potentially massive revelation for John. Unless the promo is intentionally messing with us, he appears to know how Hal can return from the dead, telling John that he “[knows] a way” to bring him back.
That opens up a whole new batch of questions about Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. Could there be a clone of Hal somewhere? The Manhunter-related mark on his arm makes that possibility worth considering.
Bringing Hal back permanently would also create an interesting wrinkle for the story. His death has carried real weight, so resurrecting him and putting him right back beside John as his mentor could change how that entire arc lands. There may be something much stranger going on here.
The promo also closes with Hal giving John a pep talk, which could lead into the moment when John finally takes flight and fully accepts his future as a Green Lantern. With Man of Tomorrow arriving next summer, the finale has plenty to accomplish if John is going to be ready for whatever comes next.
The relationship between Hal and John has been at the heart of the series, and Aaron Pierre recently spoke to Deadline about how the penultimate episode, “The Jordan Boys Legacy,” pushes that relationship further.
“We used to describe each other as these characters, like two dogs who lived in the same household, who, at home, they would maybe fight and tear each other apart, but when they were going for maybe a walk, and another dog entered the equation, bam, they were a unit, and there was nothing you could do to disrupt or destroy that unit.
“They become dangerous when they’re together. The dynamic is unbreakable, and as soon as they’re on their own, they’re tearing each other down and apart.”
Pierre also explained how John’s understanding of Hal changes throughout Lanterns: “I think his understanding of who Hal is certainly evolves over the course of the series. I think that there is a very there’s a very sincere respect and a mutual brotherly love there between the two of them.
“I think a truth that John understood at a certain point in the series [is that] he’s never gonna fully know Hal, but what he can do is understand who Hal is fundamentally at his core, at least. He may never understand all of the nuances of who this individual is, but he can discover who this man is at his core.”
He continued: “And once that curiosity was satisfied, I think he was very at peace with everything that the two of them had been through — the highs, the lows, the in-betweens, the moments that felt like purgatory. I think he just finds peace with it, because he knows who this individual is at his core, no matter what decoration or nuances surround it.”
That complicated brotherhood has given Lanterns much of its character. John and Hal can drive each other crazy, but when something threatens them from the outside, they become a dangerous team. With Hal’s fate hanging over the finale, that relationship could be heading toward one of its biggest moments yet.
