Let's Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #53

The latest issue of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is out, and I love it. What I did not love was where it left off. Well, Ryan Parrott and Moises Hidalgo are really good at this whole Power Rangers comic thing. If you haven’t read the latest issue yet, you can grab a copy from your local comic store or through digital outlets like comiXology.

I’m just going to pick up where the preview left off. Billy and Grace keep talking about Green Ranger stuff and she says she already has a list of candidates for the role. Billy doesn’t like the idea of using one of her employees or really anyone on her list. Grace then says that based on the criteria she’s convinced that the only suitable candidate is Drakkon. Obviously Billy isn’t happy about this, and I don’t think I can blame him. He is quite evil. Now, I personally think that this is a red herring, and they’ll end up going with someone else like Violet. That said, I won’t be surprised if Drakkon does become the Green Ranger.

After that discussion, we get to the meat of the issue which features the fake Rita (or Frita), Goldar, Baboo, Squat, and Finster arriving on Earth and morphing into the Dark Rangers. These enhanced bad guys are able to do quite a bit of damage against the Rangers and it’s pretty incredible to watch. Tommy goes head-to-head against Frita and confirms they’re a fake one. However, Frita is laying the smackdown on him. Meanwhile, the other Rangers regroup and use their Blade Blasters to cause enough trouble for the other Dark Rangers. This prompts Zedd to arrive with the Chaos Crystal which enhances their powers slightly, but more impressively, he gifts them the Terrorzords. It looks like they’ve got a dragon, a bear/dog/beast thing, a centaur, and two birds. Also, the Terrorzords more closely resemble creatures with flesh instead of robots. It’s going to be interesting to see how they combine (assuming they do).

I am wondering if these Dark Rangers are going to push the Power Rangers to get the Ninja Powers for the upcoming Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers series. Of course, more than anything, it’s going to push for the addition of a new Green Ranger. What did you think of MMPR #53?
