Let's Talk About WANDAVISION Episode 5 and How it Radically Changes The MCU
Holy crap! The latest episode of WandaVision was absolutely insane and that very last scene radically changes the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it means so many things, and I’m so freakin’ excited about the doors that it opens!
I’m just going to jump right into talking about that ending! After Wanda and Vision have a heated argument, which I’ll discuss later, there’s a knock at the door. Wanda goes to the door and opens it and standing there is her brother Pietro a.k.a. Quicksilver, but… it’s not the version that was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Avengers: Age of Ultron… in the MCU. He was killed by Ultron in that movie, instead, we see Evan Peters’ version of Quicksilver from the Fox X-Men films standing at the door and says, “Long lost bro get to squeeze his freakin’ sister or what!?” Darcy sees all this and asks, "She recast Pietro?"
It was rumored last year that Evan Peters would play a key role in the series, but I totally forgot about that rumor until he showed up in the series! At the time fans speculated that he would be playing Quicksilver and now here we are and I couldn’t be more happy and excited!
I think Wanda may have been trying to undo her brother's death and bring him back, and in doing so she accidentally brought back the wrong version from another universe into the MCU. If this is what Marvel is planning, I love it!
I believe that this is our first real introduction to the MCU’s Multiverse and this is how Marvel is going to introduce the X-Men into the MCU and it’s not hard to imagine that many of those same actors from the Fox films could reprise their roles in the MCU. Hell, it’s safe to assume that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool will be introduced through this rift in the multiverse that Wanda created. My head is spinning with excitement! Of course, there is a possibility that this could turn out to be something completely different.
The episode pays tribute to the classic 80’s series Family Ties and the teachable moments that we saw throughout the series.
Earlier in the episode, Wanda and Vision’s boys Billy and Tommy, who will most likely become the superheroes character known as Wiccan and Speed, find a dog named Sparky and after playing with the dog a little bit, Wanda starts talking with them about family and the importance of family. It’s here that she opens up to them about her brother Pietro and how sad she was that she hasn’t seen him, saying, "He's far away from here, and that makes me sad sometimes." The seed was obviously planted here to bring Pietro back.
By the way, Wanda’s boys are growing up super fast in this episode and at one point Wanda is trying to slow that down. As you saw, the brothers have the power to make themselves grow up faster. Later on in the episode, Sparky the dog is found dead and the boys want Wanda to bring the dog back to life but she refuses and offers a life lesson about death and how you just can’t bring dead things back to life. She also implores her boys not to make themselves grow older to skip the sadness of the event. It’s something that they have to experience.
This seems to mirror what Wanda is going through with her loss of Vision and her brother, but she is breaking the rules and not following her own advice. Why is that? Is she being controlled by something else? Something more sinister? Or is this one of those moments in life in which she is being hypocritical and not practicing what she preaches?
This chapter of the story also sees Vision start to figure out that something is wrong, that world he is living in is not natural, and he ends up confronting Wanda about it. They end up getting into a heated argument, he’s clearly upset and her influence on Vision is starting to wear off.
As they argue, she even tries to end the episode, and the end credits start to roll, but Vision isn’t having it. The whole argument fizzles out with the arrival of Quicksilver.
There’s also a commercial break during the episode for Lagos paper towels, "For when you make a mess you didn't mean to." This is a reference to the incident in Lagos, Nigeria, in Captain America: Civil War. In the ad, we hear a continued dripping sound after the mess is wiped away. This seems to hint that it's not really cleaned up. It’s like Wanda can't just make everything she doesn't like go away.
Outside Westview, FBI agent Jimmy Woo runs through Wanda's history for the SWORD agents. It’s here we learn that this whole thing started nine days ago when Wanda broke into SWORD headquarters and stole Vision's corpse. We don’t know what they were doing with Vision, but they had him, and it’s also said that Wanda defied Vision's wishes by resurrecting him. He did not want to be brought back to life.
There’s also a moment where Captain Marvel is brought up in a discussion with Jimmy Woo about Wanda's powers, and Monica calls out Wanda's power display against Thanos, saying, "Uh, she could have taken out Thanos on her own if he hadn't initiated a blitz. No one else came close." Woo then says "Well, I'd argue that Captain Marvel came close."
Monica gives a conflicted look in her expression that briefly seems to raise some red flags. Perhaps something happened between her mother and Carol.
This was such an incredible episode as it has swung the door wide open to so many different possibilities. What we are seeing here is a huge shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What are your thoughts on the episode? What are some of your theories?
