Lily James and Shun Oguri Enter Takashi Miike’s Dangerous Underworld in BAD LIEUTENANT: TOKYO Trailer
Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike is taking the Bad Lieutenant franchise to Tokyo, and that combination sounds like it could get seriously wild.
The new official Japanese trailer for Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo has arrived giving us a fresh look at Miike’s crime thriller starring Shun Oguri and Lily James in a story packed with corruption, addiction, violence, the yakuza, and one very troubled detective.
Miike, the filmmaker behind Audition and Ichi the Killer, has spent decades exploring extreme violence, damaged characters, crime, horror, and some wonderfully strange territory, and Bad Lieutenant looks like another strong movie.
Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo serves as a standalone sequel to Abel Ferrara’s 1992 film Bad Lieutenant. That movie was later followed by Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans in 2009.
This time, the story shifts to Japan and follows a detective whose life is coming apart as his latest case pulls him into an increasingly dangerous mess.
The official synopsis reads: “A disgraced Tokyo detective spirals into a world of corruption, addiction, and violence as he becomes entangled in a twisted investigation involving a vengeful ex-yakuza, an enigmatic FBI agent, and a missing daughter of a powerful American family.”
Oguri, who appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong, leads the film alongside James, known for Baby Driver. They’re joined by WWE superstar Liv Morgan, Shotaro Mamiya, Shūhei Nomura, Nanase Nishino, and Yuka Mukai.
The screenplay comes from Daisuke Tengan, whose previous credits include Audition and 13 Assassins. There’s also a direct connection to the original film on the production side. Sam Pressman, son of original Bad Lieutenant producer Edward R. Pressman, is producing.
Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo will be released in the United States later this year through NEON. Check out the new Japanese trailer below.
