Live-Action HERCULES Producers The Russo Brothers Give Update on the Disney Remake
It’s been over four years since Disney announced that they are making a live-action Hercules. This has always been an ambitious undertaking, as this is a movie about Gods and mythological creatures, and it’s a large scale musical to boot. But the Russo Brothers, best known for directing Marvel projects like Avengers: Endgame, stepped up to produce, and it has seemed like they’d keep it on track, but it’s been very slow-going.
Guy Ritchie, who helmed the live-action Aladdin, was on board to direct for some time, but he has since dropped out of the project. A new director has not yet been hired, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer, David Callaham, is said to be writing the script. He signed on before the writers strike last year, but according to the Russos, that still hasn’t moved the script forward.
In a recent Total Film interview (via Toonado.com), the Russos revealed that they're still "waiting on a script," meaning we aren’t anywhere close to entering production on the film.
The brothers previously said of the project, "There are questions about how you translate it as a musical. Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical."
Aside from casting rumors, like Ariana Grande (Wicked) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) being in the running to play Hercules and Meg, we have nothing new to report. Stay tuned, and we will let you know what we hear as the project moves forward.
