Maggie Gyllenhaal Reportedly Directing Christian Bale in a BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Movie For Netflix
An interesting new report has surfaced saying that Maggie Gyllenhaal is going to be directing a remake of The Bride of Frankenstein with Christian Bale set to star in the movie. The movie is said to simply be titled The Bride.
The interesting thing about the report is that it’s saying this going to be a remake of James Whale’s 1935 film. But, they say the project is set up at Netflix and not Universal Pictures, which owns the rights to The Bride of Frankenstein, so I’m not sure how Netflix will be able to make the film unless they licensed it or it’s more of a complete reimagining instead of a remake, which makes the most sense. I assume this film will give us a contemporary spin on the classic horror movie.
The news was reported by Production Weekly and then by World of Reel and it’s also said that Penelope Cruz will play the Bride, Christian Bale will play Dr. Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard is also in the cast.
In the original film, “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.”
Gyllenhaal previously helmed the 2021 psychological drama The Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Colman. She will reportedly start production on The Bride in the first quarter of 2024.
