Margot Robbie Auditioned For AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM But She Was Out "Out of the Realm" of Hiring
Before Margot Robbie’s big breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, she auditioned for American Horror Story: Asylum, the second season of the popular horror anthology series. It’s pretty wild that she wasn’t cast in the series, it seems like it would be a no-brainer to cast someone like Robbie, who was on the verge of major stardom.
Casting director Eric Dawson recently talked about Robbie’s screen test for the FX series back in 2012 during an interview with Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast. She said:
“Margot has a lot of ‘it’ factors. That’s the tough thing for casting directors who aren’t in the room [anymore] with actors. Margot is probably one of my favorite auditions of all time, and it was right before she broke out. She was such a star. It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room.”
So, why didn’t they cast her in the series? Apparently, she was out of their “realm of possibility of hiring.” Dawson explained:
“Even though she didn’t get that role, that was one of those things as a casting director where you go: This is a star, what do we do with her? Immediately, though, she was out of our realm of possibility of hiring. But that’s really the fun part of casting, is seeing the people whose careers are just rising.”
It seems like they didn’t cast her because she got the Wolf of Wall Street role and from there her career just blew up. It would’ve been interesting to see what Robbie’s career would’ve been like had she been cast in American Horror Story: Asylum instead of The Wolf of Wall Street.
