Margot Robbie Doesn't Understand Why People Hated BABYLON and Bombed at the Box Office

Damien Chazelle’s 2022 1920s-set Hollywood movie Babylon bombed at the box office and with critics and Margot Robbie doesn’t understand why.

I actually really liked the movie, but I’m also fascinated by the history of Hollywood and so a movie like this was something that I was excited about seeing. This movie was absolutely bonkers and explored the history of Hollywood in a wild way!

I was actually surprised that the movie didn’t do well either, but I guess it wasn’t the kind of movie audiences were interested in.

While a guest on The Talking Pictures podcast, Margot Robbie said: “I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it.

“I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?’”

She went on to talk about working with the director saying: “Damian is so thorough. Do you know what I loved so much about working with him? I felt like no one had really put their foot to the floor with the gas, but he wanted that all the time. He wanted more always. Even when we were prepping.”

Babylon is described as an epic tale “of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.”

The film also stars Brad Pitt as Jack Conrad, Diego Calva as Manny Torres, Jean Smart as Elinor St. John, Jovan Adepo as Sidney Palmer, and Li Jun Li as Lady Fay Zhu. The movie also stars Lukas Haas as George Munn and Tobey Maguire as James McKay.
