Mark Hamill Is Ready to Say Goodbye to Luke Skywalker, Doesn't See a Reason to Return
Mark Hamill is ready to say move on from Luke Skywalker and believes his time as the iconic Star Wars character should come to an end. During a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Hamill said: “I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough.”
The actor has been playing Luke Skywalker since A New Hope, which was released in 1977. The actor most recently reprised his role in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker as well as in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but the character was de-aged in those.
While there is a chance that Hamill will be back as Luke, he doesn’t think there’s any reason to bring back the character. He said: “Well, you never say never. I just don’t see any reason to. Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore.”
Hamill previously said that he doesn’t think Lucasfilm needs to tell any more Luke Skywalker stories, but if they do, he thinks that they should recast the role with an age-appropriate actor. He explained: “People say, ‘Oh, now you’re going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-Return of the Jedi.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ First of all, they don’t need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor.”
With the Rey Skywalker movie currently in development, Hamill could be asked to come back as a Force Ghost. When asked if he’d be open to reprising his role in the upcoming Rey Skywalker movie, potentially as a Force Ghost, he said: “One thing you learn working for Lucasfilm: everything is confidential. So, if I were involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. And if I were not involved, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. So, I don’t know. We’ll all find out together, I guess.”
Would you like to see Hamill continue to play Luke Skywalker or are you ready to see him retire as the character?
