Marvel Fans Piece Together Why Director Scott Derrickson Is No Longer Helming the DOCTOR STRANGE Sequel

The first Doctor Strange movie was written and directed by Scott Derrickson, and it was a huge success. It was a great movie, and fans have been excited for its sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Derrickson was expected to return to write and direct, but as we reported last week, Derrickson dropped out due to “creative differences.”

Everyone knows that’s a bogus cover-up excuse that doesn’t get into the real reasons at all. But fans are nosy and want to know the real story, so they took to Derrickson’s twitter to line up the timeline of events. Here’s what they came up with:

First, a tweet from back on September 11, just a month before Jade Halley Bartlett was hired to write the sequel:

Then, on December 16:

“Studio release dates are the enemy of art.”

December 19:

“Most major life choices come with major regrets. It’s unavoidable. But the worst choice is not choosing at all. Hell is sitting down at the crossroads.”

And finally, December 25:

“thankyourianjohnson has been trending just two days after he took time out of his vacation to talk with me at length about a personal situation I’m dealing with. An astonishingly good filmmaker, but also an incredibly gracious and incisive human being. Truly grateful for him.”

So it sounds like Derrickson was having a really hard time in this process. And it makes sense considering he definitely did not have free rein over the story this time around. With the direction the next phase of the MCU is heading, it’s a unique situation where storylines of both the films and TV series have to intersect and pave the way for one another.

It’s too bad Derrickson couldn’t continue the story he began, but hopefully we will get a director with a vision as great as his. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
