Marvel Studios is “Exploring” Bringing Back Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist

With Charlie Cox fully back in action as Daredevil in Daredevil: Born Again, fans have been wondering about the rest of the Netflix Marvel crew that makes up The Defenders. According to Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum, the door isn’t closed on their return.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Winderbaum confirmed that Marvel is “exploring” ways to bring back Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, and Finn JonesIron Fist.

“I can’t say much, but I’ll tell you that it’s so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox,” Winderbaum said. “Obviously we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it.”

He went on to explain the challenges of bringing these characters back, saying: “It’s dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television.

“But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.”

Marvel’s partnership with Netflix produced a decent lineup of street-level superhero series. Daredevil ran for three seasons (2015–2018), Jessica Jones for three (2015–2019), Luke Cage for two (2016–2018), and Iron Fist for two (2017–2018). All four characters eventually came together in the 2017 miniseries The Defenders.

Once Disney+ became Marvel Studios’ primary focus, the Netflix shows were cancelled. But now, with Daredevil making his return, along with The Punisher, the question is: will the rest of The Defenders follow?

It sounds like Marvel is at least trying to figure it out.
