MARVEL ZOMBIES Directo Talks About That Bleak Ending and Teases Season 2

Marvel Animation’s Marvel Zombies ended on a grim note that left fans scratching their heads and wondering what comes next.

Spoilers Ahead!

In the finale, Scarlet Witch uses the combined power of Infinity Hulk and Ms. Marvel to reshape the world, leaving Kamala Khan stranded in a reality that looks normal at first glance but is secretly ruled by the undead.

We also learn that Ironheart is still alive and trying to reach her best friend, who now seems to be lost in a zombie trance.

The ambiguous ending left plenty of room for more stories in this twisted corner of the Marvel Multiverse. During a recent interview with Screen Rant, director Bryan Andrews opened up about what the finale was aiming for and how it sets the stage for possible future chapters.

"We always knew it was going to be this. The question was how much to show at the end of the bleakness. At first, we had a version that was really subtle, but when we were putting it up on reels and getting editor feedback, they said, 'Hey, maybe go for it a little bit more, so people feel more of a gut punch.'"

"I was totally cool with that, but I was very protective of not making it feel too overdone or too cliffhanger-y. I think we found the perfect balance. There’s a bleakness to it, and yes, we know what happens after. So if enough people watch this and yell loudly enough, maybe we get to do the next one."

Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, chimed in with a reminder that the series’ future rests with the audience.

"Yes, yes. Subscribe to Disney+ and watch the show; maybe we’ll have the opportunity to tell more stories. Bryan and I talk all the time about this universe, and the lore is very rich. It’s like listening to a D&D campaign sometimes when we’re on the phone."

Andrews went on to tease just how much more there is to explore.

"Some of the images in mind will blow your mind, and they’re not even in the show yet. That’s why we’d need another one. I like that it has lore. It’s a rich world, and we want it to feel like Lord of the Rings in its storied history."

"There’s so much going on in different places, with things you might only get a hint of, but behind it all, there’s this massive history. Building on that is exciting.”

Right now, whether Marvel Zombies Season 2 becomes a reality depends on viewership. Marvel Studios has made it clear that if enough fans tune in, the story will continue.

Still, with What If...? Season 3 failing to leave much of a mark and the hype leaning more toward X-Men ‘97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, it’s unclear if this undead saga will get its chance to rise again.

What do you think? Did Marvel Zombies stick the landing, or are you hoping for a season 2 to flesh out this creepy alternate reality?
