MARVEL ZOMBIES Footage Screens at D23 and New Story Details Revealed For The TV-MA Series
At the end of the Marvel Animation presentation at D23, Marvel Studios shared some new footage from its upcoming What If…? spinoff series Marvel Zombies, and this show looks like a blast!
During the presentation, Marvel Animation's Bryan Andrews confirmed that Marvel Zombies will be slapped with a "hardcore" TV-MA rating, and he said that it will also be a four-episode "event series."
The footage that was screened revealed that Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Awkwafina’s Katy are the main characters in one of the stories in the series.
The first clip we watched features a city overrun with Zombies and Shang Chi and Katy are in the middle of battling them and there’s a squad of helicopters flying through the sky blowing the zombies away.
Shang-Chi’s father is in one of the choppers and he jumps out to help fight off the zombies using the power of the Ten Rings. In the middle of the Battle Chang-Chi is bitten in the arm by a zombie.
As he starts to turn into a zombie and the rot is moving up his arm, his father saves him by transferring the Ten Rings over to him. The rings go up Shang-Chi’s arm and they lock off the infection from spreading any further, but his arm remains rotting.
With his father left with no protection from the Ten Rings, he is killed and Shang-Chi and Katy escape on one of the helicopters.
The second clip is set five years after that event and the world is now a Mad Max-style wasteland! There’s a group of people driving around in these Mad-Max style vehicles and Shang-Chi, with his rtted arm, and Katy are in one of them.
As they are racing through the desert wasteland, and motorcycle gang of Krees comes riding for them, and this is the start of an awesome road rage battle.
I enjoyed the footage that was screened and the series looks like it could be a blast to watch! We’re actually going to get a proper Marvel Zombies story brought to life and that’s pretty exciting!
The series takes place in an alternate reality and reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battling against an ever-spreading zombie scourge.
The Marvels star Iman Vellani has confirmed that she will be reprising her role as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, in the series, and her character will be at the heart of the show.
Vellani said: “We’ve done the whole thing. It was amazing. It was so much fun. And I love—there are a lot of cool characters in the Marvel Zombies show. And Kamala is kind of the center of the show.”
Vellani also referenced The Lord of the Rings while talking about the series to explain Kamala’s role, saying, “They described it to me, it’s like, ‘She’s basically the Frodo of the story.’ And I was like, ‘That’s amazing.'”
There’s still no word on when the series will be released.
