Marvel's WEREWOLF BY NIGHT Sequel in Development with Michael Giacchino Back at the Helm
Marvel Studios is officially howling back at the moon and Michael Giacchino is returning to direct a sequel to Werewolf By Night! The original Disney+ Special Presentation, which premiered in 2022, brought a unique and awesome flavor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blending gothic horror, black-and-white cinematography, and classic monster movie vibes into something that felt totally fresh.
The first Werewolf By Night was a standout experiment for Marvel. It paid homage to old-school Universal monster films, delivering eerie atmosphere, moody visuals, and surprisingly intense action.
The story followed a secret gathering of monster hunters at the mysterious Bloodstone Temple, where “On a dark and sombre night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader; the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic.”
The special introduced several fascinating new characters who I’ve been wanting to see again including Gael García Bernal as cursed monster hunter Jack Russell (the Werewolf), Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, and Carey Jones as Ted, aka Man-Thing. Each one instantly became a fan favorite, and speculation about their return has been ongoing since the project debuted.
Now, it looks like we’re finally getting answers. Deadline confirmed the news saying, “Giacchino will direct his follow-up to Werewolf By Night.” While Marvel Studios hasn’t made an official announcement yet, this report is a solid sign that the sequel is moving forward behind the scenes.
Giacchino, who made his directorial debut with Werewolf By Night after years of composing some of the MCU’s most iconic scores, previously mentioned that talks about expanding this corner of the universe had taken place.
But until now, nothing concrete had been confirmed. As someone who loved the special’s vintage horror style and deeper dive into Marvel’s supernatural world, I’m pretty excited.
There’s also been chatter that Giacchino might be attached to direct Marvel’s rumored Midnight Sons movie. While that project hasn’t been officially revealed, the idea of uniting Marvel’s supernatural heroes like Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Werewolf By Night, Man-Thing, and Blade, sounds like fun!
Werewolf By Night proved that Marvel could take risks and explore unexpected genres, and fans clearly want more of it. I’m excited to see how they handle the sequel both in style and story.
It’s great to see Giacchino back in the director’s chair for another chapter in Marvel’s monster universe.
