MARVEL'S WOLVERINE Is Getting Ripped Apart by Fans Over Gameplay and Graphics
Marvel’s Wolverine is finally here, and Logan’s claws aren’t the only things coming out. Insomniac Games released Marvel’s Wolverine exclusively for PS5 on September 15th, with a $69.99 price tag.
While critics have given the game a middling 77 on Metacritic, the reaction from some players has been considerably harsher. Social media is filling up with complaints about the combat, graphics, and whether the game offers enough to justify spending $70.
One player summed up the frustration with some heavy sarcasm: “Peak gaming experience delivered to you by Insomniac Games for the low price of $70.”
A major target of the Wolverine backlash is its combat. Some players argue that Insomniac has made too many actions feel automated, taking control away from the player during fights.
One fan didn’t hold back: “THE GAME PLAYS ITSELF. Wolverine deserves all the hate it’s getting im not even kidding anymore.”
Another player took the criticism even further: “I was informed the wolverine game plays itself and I could earn platinum trophy without touching controller. Wtf is this shit I want a refund. Where is ai technology playing the game for me.”
For a character as aggressive and physical as Wolverine, combat was always going to be one of the biggest parts of the experience. Players expecting to feel completely in control of Logan’s brutal fighting style clearly aren’t all satisfied with what Insomniac delivered.
The game’s visuals are getting hammered as well, particularly its water effects. One player wrote, “Wolverine has the absolute WORST water I’ve EVER seen in a modern video game. N64 graphics. YIKES!”
Others are criticizing the overall design philosophy behind the game, suggesting it feels tailored toward players accustomed to fast, highly guided entertainment. One fan put it this way: “oh god they made a wolverine game for the average tiktok user.”
The reaction is especially notable considering Insomniac’s recent history with PlayStation and Marvel. The studio previously delivered Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, both of which received stronger critical scores.
With Wolverine currently sitting at 77 on Metacritic, it ranks among Insomniac’s lower-rated games in recent memory, and that number has continued shifting as additional reviews arrive.
Of course, angry social media posts don’t represent everyone playing Marvel’s Wolverine, but the complaints are remarkably consistent.
Wolverine can take a beating and keep moving. Insomniac may be finding out whether its new game can do the same.
