MARVEL'S WOLVERINE Won’t Feature the X-Men Team or Spider-Man, Insomniac Confirms

When Insomniac Games revealed that both Jean Grey and Mystique would appear in Marvel's Wolverine, plenty of fans naturally started wondering if Logan's solo adventure might also serve as a gateway to a larger X-Men story.

After all, seeing some of the most recognizable mutant characters in Marvel history tends to spark expectations of Xavier's School, mutant teams, and familiar comic book dynamics.

That’s apparently not what Insomniac has planned. Speaking with Eurogamer, Marcus Smith, creative director on Marvel's Wolverine, explained that while mutants are part of the world, the X-Men themselves aren't.

"The important thing, I guess, is the X-Men don't exist in our game," he says. "We wanted to focus on a Wolverine storyline and really build it from that character and build a world that is in a state where mutants aren't well known."

That statement might sound surprising considering the characters we've already seen, but Smith went on to clarify that mutants do exist and aren't exactly hidden from everyone.

He clarifies, "they are known," technically, and they're being actively hunted. But they aren't the focal point of Marvel's Wolverine, and the cast we meet will come from across Marvel canon more broadly.

For fans hoping the game would evolve into a full-blown X-Men adventure, it sounds like Insomniac is keeping its attention squarely on Logan's journey.

The game's version of the Marvel Universe appears to exist at a point in history before the X-Men have formed as an organized team or become a widely recognized concept. That doesn't mean Wolverine will be isolated from the larger Marvel world, though.

"There will be a lot of Marvel characters that come into the storyline; so we've already shown Mystique in the earlier trailer, we've shown Sabretooth, Jean Grey in this one, and players can expect to have a lot more throughout the game," Gray adds.

That opens the door for a variety of heroes, villains, and mutant characters to appear throughout the story, even if the iconic X-Men banner hasn't been established yet.

It also raises some interesting questions about where this version of Logan, Jean Grey, and other mutants fall on the broader timeline. Those details will likely become clearer as more information about the game is revealed.

Of course, another question many fans have been asking is whether Insomniac's other Marvel hero might swing into the action.

Since Marvel's Wolverine takes place in the same continuity as the studio's hugely successful Spider-Man games, crossover speculation has been impossible to avoid. The shared setting is officially known as Earth-1048, the universe Insomniac has been building across its Marvel titles.

Unfortunately for anyone hoping to see Peter Parker drop by for a quick team-up, Insomniac has already shut that idea down.

In a separate interview with IGN, Gray confirmed, "It's correct that it does take place in the 1048 Marvel Universe, which is the Insomniac video game universe. It happens in the same world, but we don't have any crossover. Spider-Man will not be making an appearance in Wolverine."

While some fans may be disappointed by that decision, it makes sense from a storytelling perspective. Keeping Logan's adventure focused allows Insomniac to build its own identity for the character without having to balance another major hero's ongoing narrative.

Shared universes are fun, but they can also create expectations and complications that pull attention away from the story being told.

For now, it sounds like Marvel's Wolverine is aiming to deliver a character-driven experience centered on Logan, with familiar Marvel faces appearing along the way. Just don't expect the X-Men to assemble or Spider-Man to swing in and save the day.
