Marvel’s ZODIAC Series Reportedly Isn’t What AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Fans Were Hoping For

Marvel Studios has another mysterious project on the way with Zodiac, and some new details about the upcoming MCU series may disappoint fans hoping for the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

While there’s been speculation that the show could serve as a revival of the fan-favorite series, a new report suggests Marvel has something entirely different planned.

According to industry insider Caleb Williams, also known as KnightGambit on X, Zodiac will be its own series centered on the criminal organization inspired by the twelve signs of the zodiac.

Rather than bringing back the old S.H.I.E.L.D. team, Marvel reportedly plans to introduce this dangerous group of villains and explore their place in the MCU.

That doesn't necessarily mean Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters are off the table, though. There are some interesting connections in Marvel Comics that could make bringing back familiar faces a natural fit.

Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum recently revealed the show's official logo at New York Comic Con and offered an intriguing tease about what fans can expect. "If you’re a fan of the comics, there is a lot hidden in that logo."

One of the more interesting possibilities involves Nick Fury and his brother, Jake Fury, who has a major connection to the Zodiac organization in Marvel Comics.

Jake eventually comes into possession of a powerful mystical artifact known as the Zodiac Key, which helps him become the villain Scorpio. He goes on to lead the Zodiac, a criminal organization that becomes a serious threat to the Avengers.

With Nick Fury's history in the MCU and his connection to S.H.I.E.L.D., there's plenty of room for Marvel to connect this new series to the characters and stories fans already know.

Of course, some longtime Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans aren't exactly thrilled about the possibility of Zodiac moving forward without their favorite characters.

One fan on X shared their concerns, saying, "I suspect if they don’t bring back something of AoS, there will be quite a massive backlash. This… may not go the way they think," Another fan had a very different reaction: "Honestly, who cares. These fanbases of old shows are just annoying and prove why Marvel shouldn’t be reviving the shows."

It's an interesting debate because Marvel has been leaning heavily into bringing back familiar characters while also attempting to introduce new stories.

The return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday is a perfect example of how divisive those creative decisions can be. Some fans love seeing familiar actors and characters return, while others would rather Marvel focus on something new.

With Doomsday approaching and projects like X-Men and VisionQuest generating excitement through casting announcements and trailers, Marvel has plenty coming down the pipeline.

Zodiac could be an opportunity to explore a different corner of the MCU while still acknowledging the franchise's television history. Bringing back a few Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters wouldn't necessarily turn the project into a revival, but it could be a cool way to connect the two shows.

There's also the possibility that Marvel is keeping the show's actual direction under wraps and that Zodiac could eventually become a soft continuation of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Nothing has been confirmed on that front, though.

For now, Zodiac is expected to arrive in 2028, and it'll be interesting to see what Marvel has planned for this criminal organization.
