Matilda Lutz Wields the Sword in New RED SONJA Footage, Chainmail Bikini and All
The legendary sword-wielding warrior Red Sonja is hoping to make a fierce comeback with a new movie. New behind the scenes footage and an image from the upcoming film give fans another look at Matilda Lutz in action, fully suited in the character’s iconic chainmail bikini.
The movie looks like it’ll give us some brutal fights, striking imagery, and a reimagining of the heroine that I hope ends up being good. This reboot is shaping up to be a gritty and stylized project.
The official Red Sonja Instagram account dropped an image, showing Lutz in the unmistakable chainmail, accompanied by the caption: “@matildalutz and the Iconic Chainmail bikini!!! Red Sonja out Aug 13.”
In a previous interview with USA Today, Lutz revealed the deeper narrative meaning behind the armor saying it was “used as an element of power that the emperor has over her … But then she owns it.”
This version of Red Sonja draws from the Dynamite Entertainment comics rather than Marvel’s original take, pushing the character in a more self-empowered and less objectified direction.
Lutz emphasized this shift saying it’s “a completely different story” and that it moves away from the “male gaze” of the original comic interpretations.”
The new footage, shared by both @goldwynfilms and the film’s official Instagram, teases gritty battles and sweeping vistas, all leading up to a nationwide One Night Only theatrical event.

The teaser trailer already set the tone, introducing the world of the film with this official synopsis: “Enslaved by an evil tyrant who wishes to destroy her people, barbarian huntress Red Sonja must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against Dragan The Magnificent and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.”
Directed by M. J. Bassett and rated R for “strong/bloody violence,” Red Sonja will hit U.S. theaters on August 13, 2025, followed by a digital release likely arriving August 29.
