Matt Reeves Talks Robin and Villain Choices For THE BATMAN: PART II

There are been rumors that Robin could finally make his way into Matt Reeves’ Gotham. During a recent conversation, Reeves shed some light on the possibility, while also teasing how the sequel is shaping up as production gears up to begin in late April with Robert Pattinson back in the cape and cowl.

Reeves confirmed that The Batman: Part II will continue as a DC Elseworlds story, standing apart from James Gunn’s DCU.

While talking with Josh Horowitz, the director revealed that he and co-writer Mattson Tomlin explored plenty of ideas and characters from Batman’s history before settling on the direction for the film.

When asked specifically about Robin, Reeves admitted:

“Well, sure, you talk about everything. There is probably not any character that we didn’t talk about. What could this be? What could that be? That’s part of the beginning of anything.”

Still, Reeves made it clear the heart ofthe sequel lies with Bruce Wayne himself. He explained how the new villain will tie directly into Batman’s personal story, saying:

“Picking the right villain that digs into what that does, that sort of goes into his past and his life. That was what drove that discussion. I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it, and I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before.”

Reeves also touched on Gunn’s recent comments about wanting him to direct something for the DCU. Reeves clarified that while conversations have happened, his focus remains firmly on finishing the story he started.

“We haven’t talked about anything like that, we have had conversations about how things would work in general. Of course it would be a lot of fun. I want to play out the stories we began and arrive at the conclusion that I hoped we’d arrived at the beginning.”

With pre-production already moving forward, Reeves confirmed that the script has been shared with Pattinson and that cameras are expected to roll by late April or early May.

While spin-offs like The Penguin series are still on the table, Reeves made it clear his priority is delivering The Batman: Part II before expanding further into Gotham.

So, while Robin may not be swooping in just yet, it’s exciting to know Reeves and his team are digging deep into Batman’s world and planning something we’ve never seen before on the big screen.
