Matt Reeves Teases "Completely Different" Villain for THE BATMAN: PART II, Promises a Fresh Side of the Dark Knight
Director Matt Reeves continues to build anticipation for The Batman: Part II as he teases what’s to come. During an interview with Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes, Reeves discussed the sequel’s progress, teased a surprising new villain, and promised that audiences will see a different side of Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
Reeves acknowledged the challenges of balancing multiple projects, including the upcoming second season of The Penguin series starring Colin Farrell. However, the filmmaker said that The Batman: Part II is a top priority.
He said: "Lauren [LeFranc], Dylan [Clark], Colin [Farrell], and I are talking about doing another season. Obviously, we're doing The Batman 2 and have to get the timing right on that."
He added that the creative team is currently working to ensure the next chapter of The Penguin fits within the broader timeline of the Batman franchise.
When asked about the progress of The Batman: Part II, Reeves expressed excitement about the story taking shape, saying:
"I mean, this year we're gonna be shooting and I'm very excited about it. There's been a lot of stuff going on and it's taken longer than I would have wanted but also, I'm super excited about what we're doing and I really can't wait to share that with everybody.”
Reeves was then asked about the rumors of Mr. Freeze as the film’s villain, but the director didn’t confirm or deny anything.
Laughing, Reeves replied: "I can't answer anything." However, he did confirm that a villain has been chosen and hinted at something unexpected.
"Yes, of course, or we'd really be in trouble. I hope [it's surprising]. I think so. I think that the story is a continuation in a certain way and completely different in another. It's gonna show a different side to Rob...it's going to be really cool."
Reeves’ comments suggest the sequel will explore uncharted territory for Gotham’s protector, pushing the character into a new and interesting direction.
While some fans speculate about the return of Barry Keoghan’s Joker or Farrell’s Penguin, Reeves’ comments make it clear the villain will be a departure from what audiences might expect.
I would love the villain to be Mr. Freeze and it would be interesting to see how he could fit into the hyper-realistic world Reeves has crafted. Translating the iconic villain's icy persona into this grounded Gotham could be really cool.
What other villains do you think Reeves could incorporate into his Batman sequel?
