Matthew Lillard Teases His Mysterious DAREDEVIL BORN AGAIN Season 2 Role and Reuniting with Vincent D’Onofrio
Fans are already fired up for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, and the excitement keeps climbing thanks to one of the show’s newest cast members, Matthew Lillard.
The fan favorite actor is stepping into the MCU as Mr. Charles, a character who is rumored to wield influence that rivals Mayor Wilson Fisk. Whether that name is pulled from Marvel Comics or crafted specifically for the series is still under wraps, but Lillard’s enthusiasm for the role has instantly made it one to watch.
While doring press for the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Lillard opened up about joining the MCU and offered an early look at what fans can expect from his scenes, especially those opposite Vincent D’Onofrio, who once again brings the Kingpin’s intimidating presence to life.
"It's good, I haven't really been asked that question yet. Obviously, working with Marvel, everything is under lock and key," Lillard said.
"I can tell you that being on that set, working with those men and women, the crew is fantastic. It's probably one of the best I've worked with in my life. D'Onofrio and I get to work together. We did a movie 100 years ago when we were both babies."
He went on to talk about connecting with D’Onofrio again in a way that promises intense on screen energy.
"Getting the chance to work with him again was just fantastic. He has such weight. Not literal weight, he's skinny right now, but when you look him in the eyes, he carries so much power with them," Lillard continued.
"It leads to good work. Good writing leads to good work. I thought that last season was really electric, and I think next season is gonna top it. I'm thrilled for the fans, and I'm excited for people to see the work."
Lillard has been staying busy with projects like Scream 7 and Carrie, but stepping into a franchise as huge as the MCU still carries its own kind of thrill. He shared how he chooses roles at this point in his career and why Daredevil fit perfectly into that mindset.
"As you get into a career and a journey, you're not thinking about where the fans are and taking a job based on their reaction," he said. "You're taking a job on, 'Does it make sense? Are they gonna pay you?
“Is it work you're gonna be proud of at the end of the day, and are you happy to hang that on your wall of accomplishments?' For me, Daredevil was all of those things."
He added one more reason he was eager to join the series.
"It was a chance to be part of this big community, which is great, but the work is great. The words are great, the character is super fun, and it's nice to...I've always wanted to be in the superhero world, Marvel, DC, obviously, with James Gunn now, so it's nice to finally get my feet wet."
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is shaping up to be a major expansion of this side of the MCU. We recently spoke with Tony Dalton, who confirmed he will return as the Swordsman, and that stacked ensemble makes the arrival of Mr. Charles even more interesting.
All episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are currently streaming, and Season 2 hits Disney+ on March 4, 2026. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arrives in theaters on December 5.
