Matthew Vaughn Says a SUPERMAN: RED SON Movie Starring Henry Cavill Would Be Interesting
Matthew Vaughn seems to really want in on some DC Studios action. After saying he’d like to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow with Milly Alcock, the filmmaker has now a pitch for an adaptation of Superman: Red Son that would star Henry Cavill.
During a recent interview with BroBible, Vaughn shared his idea, saying: "I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I'd ever read, and the current world we're living in, it's certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history... Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie."
That would be interesting, but seriously I doubt that Warner Bros. or DC Studios will ever do it. There are already multiple Superman projects in development.
When rumors started to spread about a Red Son movie in 2020, former studio chief at WB, Walter Hamada, disputed the rumors, but praised the book and said that an adaptation would not be out of the question down the line.
Hamada said at the time: "I think the possibility is there. Our focus is great stories, so if we come across the right filmmaker with an interesting story, that doesn't work in our existing timeline, and it would work as an Elseworld, we would definitely explore that. We're not currently developing Red Son, so that isn't one of them, but when the right filmmaker or the right idea comes together, that's the beauty of [a] multiverse, is we can explore it. We can go down the road and take a shot at it....The answer is yes, there will be opportunities. That one is not one that we're currently exploring."
If they did ever make a Red Son movie, I would love to see Cavill cast. But, again, that will probably never happen.
Superman: Red Son was written by Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar, centers on a Superman whose rocket crash-landed in Soviet Russia rather than Kansas.
