Meg Donnelly Opens Up About Her SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW Audition and Her DCU Hopes

Meg Donnelly, who provides the voice of Supergirl in the Crisis on Infinite Earths animated films, was up for the live-action role of the character in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and during a recent interview with CBM, she talked about her audition process.

The role ultimately went to House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, but there were some fans who thought Donnelly would be a great choice if cast by James Gunn.

When talking about her experience auditioning for the role, Donnelly said: "It was something that I really had to fight for to get an audition because I wanted to be a part of [it] and be Supergirl in any way.

“That was a dream of mine, to be a superhero on screen as well. So, I really fought for the audition and the fact that I got one and they liked it and I was then able to go and screen test."

She went on to share how close she got to landing the role, saying: "I was able to do stunts and do scenes on camera as Supergirl. That was really all I could ask for; the fact I was able to do that.

“I still don't really feel like it was real, so it was just an honour. I think they're just going in a different direction and that's totally great but everyone there was so nice and incredible. It was surreal how nice they were [Laughs]."

She added: "It was cool to get so close and hopefully be in the DCU in any way, that would be really cool. It was a great experience."

When asked about what other DC roles Donnelly would be interested in, she seemed like she’s open to anything.

The actress said: "I think, yeah, it's a case of waiting and seeing who ends up coming into the DC Universe and the cinematic universe. I'm definitely keeping an eye out on that because just being a part of James Gunn's team in any way was really cool and felt really great."

"Hopefully, there is a space for that so, honestly, it would be really cool to play any superhero on screen. There are just so many to choose from!"

It was previously reported that the movie would go into production after Gunn is finished shooting Superman. So, Supergirl will be the next DC film to go into production.

Ana Nogueira is writing the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Craig Gillespie (Cruella and I, Tonya) is set to direct Woman of Tomorrow.

It was explained that the movie is “based on Tom King’s wonderful comic book series that came out just last year… This is a very different type of Super Girl.”

In this film, “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time is an infant versus super girl who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She's not exactly the Supergirl we are used to seeing.”

In that story from King’s comic: “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for?”

Wherever she goes, “people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there.”

She wants revenge, “and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”

The movie arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026.
