Melissa Benoist Comments on Milly Alcock Being Cast as Supergirl in The DCU

Melissa Benoist, who played Kara Zor-El in The CW’s DC series Supergirl, has commented on Milly Alcock being cast as Supergirl in James Gunn’s DCU. During an interview with ScreenRant, Benoist was asked what she was excited to see in Alcock’s version of Kara in Gunn’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, and she said:

“I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for. Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the ’50s. I personally think that every iteration of her is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it.”

There have been a lot of mixed reactions regarding Alcock being cast as Supergirl, but Gunn has always had a good eye for casting the roles in his films, and he obviously felt that she was the best choice for the role, and I’m excited to see how she brings this classic DC character to life.

Supergirl will likely make her DCU debut in Gunn’s Superman, and from there she will star in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is being written by Ana Nogueira. That movie will be based on the eight-issue DC miniseries by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

Tom King loves the casting of Alcock, and previously shared his reaction, saying: "She's Supergirl and she doesn't give a #%*# about slings and arrows. Perfect casting. Couldn't be more excited to see Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the world [Bilquis Evely] built, brought to life by this incredible actor. Insanity. It started so small..."

The synopsis for the comic reads: “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not yet have a release date. All six seasons of Supergirl are currently streaming on Netflix.
