Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd Discuss the Possibility of a New BACK TO THE FUTURE Movie
I would seriously hate to see Hollywood try and reboot the Back to the Future franchise, but one day it very well could happen. It wouldn’t surprise me because, you know… Hollywood. If another Back to the Future movie did get made, though, what do the original stars, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, think of that?
Well, during a recent interview with Variety, Fox said: “I’m not fanatical. Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.” But, at the same time, he doesn’t think the Robert Zemeckis-directed and Bob Gale-scripted trilogy needs another movie. He said: “I don’t think it needs to be. I think Bob and Bob have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”
When asked if he was ever approached to make a fourth film in the franchise to reprise his role as Marty McFly, Fox answered: “I’m sure somebody thought about it. But I was in the early stages of Parkinson’s at that point, so I don’t know that I would have wanted to take that on. Right after ‘Part Three’ had done well, there might have been conversations about it, but I never got involved in them.”
As for Christopher Lloyd, he’s up for a sequel if anyone ever decided to continue his story as Doc Brown. He said: “I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and [producer Steven] Spielberg felt that they told the story in the three episodes. But if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film it might happen.”
Lloyd went on to talk about working with Fox on the first three films and why they had such great chemistry on screen: “There was a certain ease between us. I didn’t have to struggle to get there with Michael. There was never any conflict. It just fit. And it’s never stopped. I feel like we could go and do it again after all these years and not have to think about the relationship between Marty and Doc.”
I’d be fine never seeing Back to the Future rebooted and as long as Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Steven Spielberg are alive, I don’t think we’ll see that happen. What do you think? Would you be up for a Back to the Future reboot? I think a sequel would be cool, but that would be hard to do considering Fox has retired from acting.
