Mike Flanagan Calls His CARRIE TV Adaptation “One of My Favorite Projects Ever” as Filming Wraps
Filming has officially wrapped on Amazon’s new Carrie TV series, and creator Mike Flanagan couldn’t be more happy about how it turned out. The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass filmmaker shared his excitement on Instagram over the weekend, calling the experience one of the best of his career.
“Our last day of filming on CARRIE. This has been one of the best experiences of my career, one of the very best ensembles I’ve ever worked with, and already one of my favorite projects ever. Cannot wait for you guys to see what we made.”
The series is a fresh take on Stephen King’s 1974 horror classic, which tells the story of a bullied teenage girl who discovers terrifying telekinetic powers. Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie, joined by a killer ensemble that includes Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Katee Sackhoff, and Rahul Kohli.
This project marks Flanagan’s first television series outside of Netflix, where he built an incredible horror legacy with The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Moving to Amazon seems like a new chapter for the director, who’s been on a creative hot streak adapting King’s work.
Just this past summer, Flanagan released The Life of Chuck, a feature film adaptation of King’s novella about a man’s life told in reverse. The film starred Tom Hiddleston, Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill, and Jacob Tremblay, and it proved once again that Flanagan has a deep understanding of King’s storytelling and emotional horror.
Carrie has been adapted for the screen several times, starting with Brian De Palma’s legendary 1976 version starring Sissy Spacek, and it’s a film that set the bar for supernatural horror.
Later adaptations in 2002 (with Angela Bettis) and 2013 (with Chloë Grace Moretz) didn’t quite capture the same critical magic. With Flanagan at the helm of this latest adaptaiton, though, fans are hopeful this new series will finally do King’s novel justice for a modern audience.
There’s no release date yet for Carrie, but if Flanagan’s past work is any indication, this one’s going to be something great.
