Mike Flanagan Wants THE EXORCIST to Be the "Scariest Movie I've Ever Made"

Director Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) is currently developing a new The Exorcist movie for Blumhouse, and he’s got some big ambitions for it. In fact, he sees the opportunity as a goal to make the scariest movie he’s ever made.

When the project was first announced, it was said to be a “radical new take for the franchise,” and now he is teasing his vision for the future of the franchise.

While talking is The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan said: “We aren’t making this easy on ourselves. But I’ve always felt that there’s no point in going into a franchise or into a property that monolithic unless there’s something new you can bring. I chased The Exorcist very aggressively because I was convinced I had something that I could add.”

He continued: “This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise, something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia.

“I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am.”

Well, hell! I hope he is actually able to pull this off! I would love nothing more than for him to make a scary-ass Exorcist horror movie! I will say, if anyone can do it, it’s Flanagan. The guy is one hell of a talented filmmaker and storyteller, especially with horror movies.

Flanagan previously said in a statement: “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

Blumhouse Boss Jason Blum added: “Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”

David Gordon Green originally planned a trilogy for The Exorcist, but after that first film completely bombed, it was clear the franchise needed a new direction. I can’t wait to see what Flanagan has planned for it!
