Milly Alcock’s SUPERGIRL Costume Has an Pretty Cool Connection to Christopher Reeve’s Superman

The DC Universe is moving full speed ahead, and one of the most anticipated projects on the horizon is Supergirl. After making a brief appearance in Superman, Milly Alcock is set to take center stage as Kara Zor-El in director Craig Gillespie’s upcoming film.

Fans are eager to see what this new version of the character brings to the table, but it turns out there’s already a very cool detail connecting her directly to Superman’s cinematic legacy, and it’s the kind of detail longtime DC fans are going to love.

While speaking with Raiders of the Lost Podcast, Alcock shared an incredible piece of information about her Supergirl costume that pays tribute to the late Christopher Reeve, whose portrayal of Superman remains one of the most beloved in comic book movie history.

Alcock revealed: “So my cape in this film was remade using material from the original Superman cape, I think from the first Superman. I think that they found, it was like 16 meters of that material. So that's in the back of my cape now.”

That’s a really cool way to honor the character’s history. The new Supergirl suit already stands out thanks to its vibrant comic book-inspired design and its visual connection to David Corenswet’s Superman.

But learning that part of the cape is literally made from material used for Reeve’s original costume adds an extra layer of meaning to it. It’s a subtle tribute that bridges generations of DC storytelling while connecting the new DC Universe to the foundation that helped make superhero movies what they are today.

Reeve’s impact on the superhero genre can’t be overstated. His performance in Superman helped define the modern comic book movie and established a version of the character that audiences still revisit decades later.

He perfectly balanced Superman’s optimism, compassion, and heroism while delivering a memorable take on Clark Kent through his physical performance and mannerisms. Of course, he also looked fantastic wearing that iconic suit and cape.

This isn’t the first time modern DC projects have paid respect to Reeve’s legacy. Henry Cavill famously tried on Reeve’s Superman suit during his screen test process for Man of Steel. Now, Alcock’s Supergirl is carrying a piece of that same history into the next era of DC films.

It’s a great reminder that while new filmmakers and actors continue to reinvent these legendary characters, there’s still a deep appreciation for the people who came before them. Small touches like this show that the creative teams working on these movies understand just how important that legacy is to fans.

Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26th.
