Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Will Be a “Big Part” of the DCU’s Next Major Movie After MAN OF TOMORROW
DC Studios has a clear roadmap for where some of its biggest characters are headed. One of those characters is Kara Zor-El, and according to DC producer Lars P. Winther, fans can expect to see a lot more of Milly Alcock after the release of Supergirl.
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Winther revealed that Alcock’s future in the DCU extends well beyond her solo film and even beyond the upcoming Man of Tomorrow.
He said: "So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that."
Winther didn’t reveal which project comes after Man of Tomorrow, but DC Studios co-head James Gunn has already announced several Chapter One: Gods and Monsters films that are still waiting for release dates. Those include The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority, and a Wonder Woman movie.
At this point, it's anyone’s guess where Kara shows up next. Maybe she crosses paths with Diana Prince in a future team-up adventure, or perhaps she becomes one of the central figures connecting the growing DCU together. Whatever the plan is, it sounds like Supergirl will remain one of the franchise’s key players moving forward.
Before that happens, though, Alcock will appear in Man of Tomorrow, and Winther hinted that the ending of Supergirl directly points audiences toward where Kara’s story goes next.
He explained: "Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie. Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up.
“She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based."
That comment lines up with what fans know about the story of Supergirl, which is inspired by the acclaimed Woman of Tomorrow comic series.
The film follows Kara during a difficult chapter of her life as she deals with the trauma of her past by drifting through space, partying her way across the galaxy with Krypto as her closest companion.
When a devastating tragedy changes everything, she finds herself pulled into a quest for vengeance and justice alongside a young ally.
The movie also features Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem. While the film does include a cameo from Superman actor David Corenswet, director Craig Gillespie has emphasized that Kara’s story stands on its own.
As Gillespie explained: "It is a standalone film." Even so, the movie clearly plays an important role in establishing the larger DCU. Winther discussed the studio’s approach to building this new franchise, saying:
"We’re trying to build our DCU and that Superman family… We are not just trying to do what the previous regime did and dig in about the same characters. We are trying to get some of the newer characters in. So we want to base it with Superman and felt that [Kara] was the next best character to build that story."
That philosophy has been evident since Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their plans for Chapter One. Rather than focusing exclusively on Batman and Superman, the studio appears committed to introducing a wider range of DC heroes and antiheroes, with Supergirl positioned as one of the franchise's foundational characters.
After Supergirl arrives in theaters, the next DCU film scheduled for release will be Clayface in September 2026, followed by Man of Tomorrow in summer 2027.
With Winther confirming that Alcock is already set to play a major role beyond those projects, it certainly sounds like Kara Zor-El is being positioned as one of the most important heroes in the future of the DC Universe.
Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26.
