Mindy Kaling Confirms That She Will Not Be Returning for Pixar Sequel INSIDE OUT 2
It was confirmed at D23 Expo 2022 that fans could expect a sequel to the hit Pixar animated film Inside Out from 2015. Inside Out 2 is set to drop in 2024, and the only confirmed actors to have signed on to return are Amy Poehler, who will be back as the voice of Joy; Lewis Black as the voice of Anger; Phyllis Smith as the voice for Sadness; and Diane Lane returning as the Mom in the story. That leaves original cast members Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Richard Kind, and a few more are up in the air.
Now we have word that Mindy Kaling, who voiced the green character Disgust in the original movie, is officially not returning to her role.
While recently talking with The Wrap about her upcoming Scooby-Doo spin-off series Velma, Kaling was asked about Inside Out 2, and she responded:
“I had a great time working on ‘Inside Out’ and am sure ‘Inside Out 2’ will be great. But I’m not working on it.”
She additionally stressed that she is not a part of the movie “right now.” This could reflect the fact that rumors stated members of the cast were reluctant to join the sequel after dealing with salary disputes. Kaling’s involvement could change depending on whether the story takes a different form (Pixar movies famously go through many iterations before making it to the screen) or, of course, they reach an agreement on compensation.
I would be bummed to see a second film without the original voice cast! Inside Out is a movie my kids have loved and continued to watch over the years and I look forward to watching the sequel. Onward head of story Kelsey Mann is directing the film, and Meg LeFauve is returning to write the script.
Inside Out 2 is set to hit theaters on June 14, 2024.
