MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING Will Explore Ethan Hunt's Past Through the Film's Villain
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is going to be a spectacular movie! The last trailer that was released was awesome, and it got the fans extremely pumped up for the next mission of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt!
Well, according to director Christopher McQuarrie, this next installment of the franchise will dive into the past of Ethan Hunt, which is going to be interesting. The story of Hunt prior to the events of the first Mission: Impossible movie largely remains a mystery, so it’ll be interesting to see how exactly they play with that.
It’s been revealed that Hunt’s past will be tied to the villain of the story, a threat from his past who emerges. Apparently, Nicholas Hoult was originally set to play this character, but the actor had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. So, Esai Morales was cast in the role, and because Morales is much older than Hoult, the entire star arc for the character, Gabrial, was rewritten to fit the actor.
During an interview with Empire, McQuarrie teased Hunt’s backstory saying: "Casting Esai allowed us to explore things with those characters and the notion of Ethan's past. Ethan has a past that predates the IMF, and that allowed us to explore that with a character that knew Ethan before Ethan was Ethan. That's part of who Gabriel is."
McQuarrie went on to share that all of the details surrounding this Gabriel character, including his name, were chosen very specifically: "Every detail of the story is very carefully considered. People who want to do their homework can derive from that whatever they please."
So that makes the whole connection even more intriguing. It looks like it’s time to revisit the previous Mission: Impossible movies and start doing some homework!
The test screenings are also doing really well, and apparently, these audiences are losing their minds over the movie, and after watching what I just saw… I believe it!
The movie also stars Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny along with newcomers Shea Whigham (Joker), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Avengers: Infinity War), and Esai Morales (La Bamba, Titans), Charles Parnell, Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes (Saw). Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds, Albert Nobbs), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), and Holt McCallany (Mindhunter, Nightmare Alley).
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two will be released on July 14th, 2023, and June 28th, 2024.
