MORTAL KOMBAT II Writer Already Has Plans for Four More Sequels and He’s Teasing More Classic Fighters

The new Mortal Kombat II is already throwing more fighters, more chaos, and more fan-favorite characters onto the screen, but apparently this is only the beginning.

Writer Jeremy Slater has revealed that he’s already mapping out where the franchise could go next, and it sounds like Warner Bros. might have enough material to keep this tournament going for years.

Considering how massive the Mortal Kombat roster has become over the decades, that’s probably the smartest approach possible. The games have introduced an absurd number of memorable fighters, and fans always have opinions about who deserves screen time.

The sequel already expanded the roster with characters like Baraka, Noob Saibot, and Shao Kahn, while finally bringing Johnny Cage into the spotlight with Karl Urban stepping into the role.

But according to Slater, there are still a ton of fighters waiting in the wings. During an interview with Variety, he explained:

“I have dozens of characters that I want to bring into live action. Some of them are on deck next, and some of them are being saved for a hypothetical 4, 5, or 6. In success, we will get to as many of the classics as we possibly can, but we always want to be careful to never overload the audience.”

That’s exactly the kind of thing longtime Mortal Kombat fans want to hear. This franchise has decades of lore to pull from, and there are still plenty of iconic kombatants who haven’t made the jump to live-action yet.

The fact that Slater is already thinking several movies ahead makes it sound like the creative team is treating this like a full cinematic universe rather than a short-lived experiment.

Honestly, that’s probably the right move. The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie ended up becoming one of the better video game adaptations we’ve gotten in recent years, and the sequel clearly wants to build on that momentum instead of starting over from scratch every time.

Slater also made it clear that fan feedback is playing a role in shaping the future of the franchise, which should make the hardcore Mortal Kombat crowd pretty happy. He said:

“I know exactly which new characters we’re bringing in, but it’s way too early to tell people at this point. We’re also being really receptive to the fan base.

“Todd Garner has maintained such a great relationship with the Mortal Kombat fan base and keeping a dialogue open in terms of ‘Who are you dying to see in live action?’

“We have that feedback to take into consideration, but we also have to balance that against the story needs of where we ultimately want to take it and what we’re building toward.)”

That balancing act is probably the toughest challenge these movies face. Every fan has their personal favorites they want to see throwing punches, ripping spines out, or freezing somebody solid. But trying to cram every character into one movie would turn the whole thing into chaos.

Spacing these fighters out across multiple sequels actually gives the franchise room to breathe and lets each character have a moment to shine instead of becoming glorified cameos.

Now the big question is whether Warner Bros. will fully commit to Slater’s long-term plan. Mortal Kombat II may not have dominated the box office against The Devil Wears Prada 2, but there’s still clearly a passionate audience for this franchise.

If the studio keeps supporting it, there’s a real chance we could eventually see some deep-cut fighters make their live-action debut.
