Mortal Kombat might not have been the bloody masterpieces that fans were hoping for. It was no lawless victory, but hell… it had some pretty awesome and insanely violent fight sequences that were authentic to the source material. I guess if that’s what you were looking for it delivered, but at the same time, they never had the damn Mortal Kombat tournament!

Anyway, if the movie ends up getting a sequel writer Greg Russo already has plans for it, and during a recent interview with Syfy Wire, he explained how the first movie that was released left several elements of the Mortal Kombat universe open so it’s available for the future. He explained:

“In the back of my head, I was always thinking like, ‘Where can I go? Where can the world go so that it’s not painted into a corner?’ And so one of the realms that I felt like it didn’t make sense to introduce in this story, because we were so focused on Earthrealm and Outworld, was Edenia, which is another big realm in the Mortal Kombat universe. And that has a ton of great characters that reside there, their storylines intersect there. My favorite character, Kitana, is a princess in Edenia and it just didn’t feel right to bring her in. There’s other characters too that people love there, like Sindel and Jade and all those characters. So that’s a whole realm that I think is worth exploring, and I have some really cool ideas of what I would do with storylines there.”

The end of the first film certainly left a sequel open that will involve other characters and the return of others. We know Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim signed a four-film deal, and it’s looking like Johnny Cage is going to end up showing up as well.

Do you think Warner Bros. will make a sequel? Are you even interested in a sequel? What would you like to see from a sequel if it does get made?
